Peniscola. Walk along the pier. Bufador Grotto

Before we say goodbye to Peniscola, we will take a short walk along the pier of the fishing port.

The pier has a length of more than 600 meters and protects not only the fish Harbor, but also the southern beach of the city from waves and wind.

With the end of the pier you can see all the main historical sites peñíscola: the blue walls and the bell tower of the Church of St. Mary, above is absolutely identical to the bell tower of the Church of the virgin of Ermitana, built a century earlier, at the highest point of the island are seen the battlements of the castle built by the knights Templar in the early 14th century, the last refuge of the Pope of the schismatic Benedict XIII, known as Papa Luna.

Looking in the other direction, above the rocky cliff, we will see the new area (urbanisation) of Serromar (urbaizacion Cerromar), built up with villas and housing complexes. The area has appeared only recently, as part of a program to attract investors to Valencia, but due to the pan-European economic downturn, most townhouses and apartments are still waiting for their buyers.

Along the Western wall of the fortress stretches a channel formed after the construction of the port pier.

Previously, the walls of the fortress were lapped by salty sea waves, now in the channel separated from the sea, fresh water flows from a spring under the fortress wall, built in the 16th century.

Across the moat is thrown the arch of a wooden bridge, the railing of which is hung with locks of loyalty.

This concludes my acquaintance with Sunny Peniscola, and I go to the hotel to get ready for the road. Today, another Valencian city is waiting for me - Castellon de La Plana.
